Entry Level Machinist - Honer / Bore Grinder (Training Provided)

Custom Machine & Tool Co. (CMT), an established, precision manufacturer of power transmission components specializing in timing pulleys has an opening for an entry level machinist specializing in honing / bore grinding. This is a full-time, entry-level role focuses on honing small diameter bores using a variety of manual and CNC Sunnen honing machines and associated tooling such as mandrels and stones. The position is hands-on and is well-suited for someone with an affinity for manual work, mechanical processes, and meticulous attention to detail, even if they have limited prior experience.

Key responsibilities

  • You would be taught to set-up and operate manual and CNC Sunnen honing machines to produce precise small-diameter bores to specification, using appropriate mandrels, stones, and fixturing.
  • Load, secure, and hone workpieces, monitoring cycle progress and adjusting feeds, speeds, and stroke as directed to achieve required roundness, straightness, and surface finish.
  • Measure and inspect bores using precision instruments (such as bore gages, pins, micrometers, and calipers) to verify dimensions, geometry, and surface quality.
  • Perform basic machine care, including cleaning, oil/coolant checks, stone changes, and routine preventive maintenance under supervision.
  • Follow detailed work instructions, job travelers, and quality procedures while maintaining a clean, organized, and safe work area.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • No prior honing or grinding experience required, although some prior exposure to a manufacturing environment, automotive, or other hands-on mechanical work is preferred, with the ability to read blueprints and measurements /tolerances.
  • Strong attention to detail, patience for precision work, and comfort with repetitive, manual tasks in a production environment.
  • Values safety, quality, and consistency in daily work, and follows established procedures closely.
  • Enjoys working with hands-on equipment and is motivated by producing accurate, high-quality parts to tight tolerances.
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to work collaboratively with experienced machinists and supervisors who will provide training and feedback. This is a full-time position, $18.00 per hour to start, with a review after 90 days. We will require someone with reliable transportation and the ability to work a minimum of 37.5 hours per week.
